The Studebaker GT Hawk is a handsome car that doesn’t look anachronistic when parked next to other cars from the early 1960s. That it doesn’t look dated is a tribute to designer Brooks Stevens, considering that he was working with a basic body shape that was 10 years old at that point. To be sure, it was a great shape, the ’53 Studebaker coupe, one of the classic designs, but as forward looking as that coupe was in 1953, a decade later it was indeed dated. Stevens, didn’t really do much, he gave the car bladed rear fenders and cleaned up the front end a bit but mostly his new formal roofline gave the car a fresh look that seemed up to date next to a ’61 Continental or ’64 Imperial.
