Sorry for the delay in presenting content from the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix but 3D video takes time to process. I attended the races held on Sunday and was able to get footage of both the Pirelli World Challenge and the IndyCar races, and I’m happy to report that the 3D results were better than last year, the first race that I shot. At the advice of our 3D friend Jim Kelley I’ve switched to using manual alignment which, to my eyes, gives much better results, with a lot less visual jitter. It’s also a lot faster than having the software analyze each frame. Here are the Pirelli Word Challenge racers warming up their cars on the Belle Isle circuit. In addition to repaving much of the track (which started breaking up during last year’s IndyCar race, much to organizers’ chagrin) they’ve also gone back to the configuration used when CART raced on the Island that has an additional straightaway with a braking zone that allows for more passing. All the drivers seemed to be pleased with the improvements. This video was shot from one of the corporate chalets located in the complex of turns 7 through 11, which is where the track pavement started to fall apart during last year’s race. Turns 8, 9 and 10 have been completely repaved. While the absolute speed of the IndyCar Dallaras is greater, it’s fun to watch drivers hustle production based cars around a road course. The attractive building in the background is the Belle Isle Casino, which serves as the media center during the race.
