3Detroit is a film and video production company that, as you can guess from the name, specializes in shooting and producing 3D content, working with both theatrical and commercial clients, like automobile companies Ford, Honda and Chrysler. Their automotive work included both promotional materials and training videos. The company is run by Charles Booth, who has an interesting connection to the auto industry besides shooting 3D for car companies. His great-grandfather, James Scripps Booth, was a pioneer in the automobile industry, eventually producing and selling cars under the Scripps Booth brand, which was absorbed by Chevrolet. Before that he made cyclecars and a contraption in 1908 called the Bi-Autogo, which has nothing to do with group sex in a car but rather was a huge two wheel vehicle (plus two small training wheels) that was powered by the first V8 engine made in Detroit.
Anyhow, Charley and his crew are some of the world’s experts at shooting 3D video. The 3D videos that we produce ourselves for Cars In Depth aren’t terrible, but our video rig is very primitive and I’ll be the first to say that as a videographer I make a decent writer. If you want to see the potential of using 3D with cars, I encourage you to take the time and watch this video that 3Detroit produced of a 1974 DeTomaso Pantera at Vasquez Rocks.
