Porsche says that, “Just like the legendary original 911 Targa of 1965, the new models feature the distinctive Targa roof bar, a movable front roof section, and a wraparound rear window.” What they don’t say is that the Targa roof bar in this 911 is really part of the car’s elaborate retractable roof. The bar lifts up while the front fabric covered roof panel is retracted under the rear bodywork that raises to accommodate it. Then the Targa “bar” and the rear window settle back down to reproduce the look of the 1965 car. The difference between this 911 Targa and the original from the 1960s is that the original had a simple roof panel that was removed by hand and the 2014 car uses an elaborate and heavy mechanism to accomplish the same task. Dr. Porsche might have admired the clever mechanism but I doubt he’d be happy about the weight.  All Targa models will have AWD and feature the wider rear body of the new AWD 911s. Porsche says that they used the wider AWD body panels to work with the wraparound backlight and give the new 911 Targa “an extremely sporty and low-slung profile.” My guess is that AWD was an afterthought, as is the sporty and low-slung profile, and that they used the wider body panels to have more room for the roof and it’s mechanism, adding yet more weight to the car. In any case, we shot video of the roof going up and down as well as the full car on a turntable.
