Another great step in the career of PS3 gamer-turned racing driver Lucas Ordonez occurred at the 2011 Le Mans 24 hours, where the young Spaniard claimed a second-in-class finish. Driving for the signatech nissan team in the LMP2 category, Ordonez (pictured second right) and team mates Franck Mailleux and Soheil Ayari overcame early troubles, including two punctures, to fight back to through the field to ninth overall. Lucas described the event as “one of the best days of my life and best in my career so far,” Ordonez continues to impress in his fledgling career made possible through the GT Academy, a competition who’s reputation is done no harm by his further success.
The race was packed full of excitement an incident, with the eventual winning Audi R18 (Fässler/Tréluyer/Lotterer) finishing just 13.8 seconds clear of the lead Peugeot 908 (Bourdais/Pagenaud/Lamy) at the end of a full day’s racing. The other two Audis were both involved in huge accidents whilst lapping slower traffic, Allan McNish and Mike Rockerfeller escaping uninjured from spectacular incidents.
