It’s funny how language works. A word or a phrase can continue in use long after whatever inspired that phrase have evaporated into the mists of time. The word “doozy” or “doozie” came into use in the 1920s and 1930s to indicate something remarkable. It came from the word Duesenberg, a most remarkable brand of automobiles. Fred and Augie Duesenberg simply made the best cars in the world. Duesenbergs were simultaneously the final word in automotive luxury and the standard for high performance for much of the early 20th century. Eddie Rickenbacker raced for the Duesenbergs at Indianapolis and the wealthiest people, then and now, have owned them. Two of the categories of cars at the inaugural Concours d’Elegance of America at St. John’s will feature Deusenbergs representing both those sides of America’s premier marque. This is the first year for the Concours to be held at the St. John’s conference center and golf course in Plymouth. The show outgrew its former home at Meadow Brook hall in Oakland county after almost 20 years at the former Dodge estate. Two of the featured classes will be Duesenberg Model A and Model J cars, and cars that raced in the Indianapolis 500. At the media preview for the concours, they had an example of each class, including a 1929 Duesenberg Model J Town Car and a 1931 Duesenberg based Indy car that competed in the race three times, finishing as high as 13th place in 1933. In addition to photos I was also fortunate to get video of both of those cars running as they left the hotel grounds. I’m still processing some of the video and will update this post when everything is ready but in the meantime you can enjoy a couple of real doozies.
