Car Tunes: Rocket 88 – Ike Turner/Jackie Brenston

Some say this is the first rock ‘n roll song released on Chess Records in 1951. Though the role of Chess Records in popularizing Chicago style blues is well known, their seminal role in Rock n’ Roll is not as widely acknowledged. Not only did they introduce Chuck Berry but they also released this song, Rocket 88, about a guy trying to impress a girl with his car, recorded by Ike Turner’s band, with Jackie Brenston fronting.
