At the Drive In: Drive

Director Nicolas Winding Refn’s new film Drive has gotten a lot of buzz after wowing the critics at the Cannes festival. Ryan Gosling stars as a Hollywood stunt man who moonlights as a wheelman for a gang of thieves. Of course, the heist goes wrong, a woman is involved, well, actually two, and there are lots and lots of chase scenes. The cast is strong with funnyman Albert Brooks taking a dramatic role as a bad guy, Ron Perlman playing his gruff usual self, and Christina Hendricks as, well, does it really matter as long as her own usual self is in the movie, in stilettos? If the movie is as good as the trailer and clips indicate, I expect Drive to become one of those evergreen car guy movies, like The Italian Job and Vanishing Point. I don’t know if Gosling’s black Mustang GT will become as iconic as Bullit’s green ‘Stang, but it’s possible. Looking at the clips and thinking about Bullit’s Mustang and its Charger one of moviedoms more famous Mopars, I do think that Refn’s choice of the Ford and a Chrysler 300 were not completely coincidental. Here is the official trailer, the Cannes clip, and another excerpt.

Coming to theatres on September 16, 2011. Starring: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks, Ron Perlman, Christina Hendricks, Tina Huang
