With its 351 CI Ford “Cleveland” V8, the DeTomaso Pantera has always had a strong following in the Motor City. That’s why it’s not surprising that in the short time I was at the Cruisin’ Hines event I spotted two of the Italian-American mid-engine exotics. The videos are of a fairly stock looking yellow Pantera coming and going on Edward Hines Drive. The photos are of a ’73 that was parked at Nankin Mills, the site of one of Henry Ford’s small Village Industries facilities. Ford donated the land for Hines Park to Wayne County in exchange for the county building roads for access and hydroelectric dams to power those small factories. The red Pantera has been customized to a great degree with superb work. It looks like a factory show car. In addition to various spoilers, splitters and winglets, the car has an European interior and completely reworked (and pristine) sheetmetal in the engine compartment. That metal needed to be reshaped to accommodate rear tires that might actually be twice as wide as stock. Words like massive are overused but this Pantera’s rear tires are undoubtedly massive. Those tires are mounted on wheels that are custom three piece units that replicate the look of stock DeTomaso Pantera wheels. The engine has custom aluminum heads. The owner was justifiably proud. Many, perhaps most, customs either have poor aesthetics or bad execution. This red Pantera is a dramatic exception to that rule. Very nicely done!
