Car Tunes: Down The Line – Buddy Holly

For our regular Friday music feature, we’re turning to a lesser known song from the great Buddy Holly, Down The Line, originally recorded in 1955 with Bob Montgomery before Holly became famous. It may not be as well known as Holly’s big hits, but it’s a nice little shuffle about a guy trying to see his girl. A simple formula really, a guy, a girl and a car. What I like about the song is that it’s called Down The Line, but it’s got an infectious chorus of “I gotta go, go, go, go, go, go, go”. Apparently Holly recorded the song at least a couple of times and there are undubbed and overdubbed versions of both. Lyrics and more versions below the jump.

BUDDY HOLLY
“Down The Line”
(Holly / Montgomery / Petty)

Well, my ol’ car’s a-rollin’ down the line
Thoughts of my baby runnin’ through my mind
She’s a-waitin’ for me, I gotta be on time
I gotta go, go, go, go, go, go, go
I gotta go, go, go, go, go, go, go

Well, the white marker’s flying off the road below
Man, I’m a-really flyin’ low
My baby’s waitin’, I can’t go slow
I gotta go, go, go, go, go, go, go
I gotta go, go, go, go, go, go, go

Well, a big policeman pulled alongside a-me
He said, “Boy you ain’t quite as fast as me!”
I showed him a picture of that baby of mine
He said, “Boy you gotta roll on down that line!”

Well, my ol’ car’s a-rollin’ down the line
Thoughts of my baby runnin’ through my mind
She’s a-waitin’ for me, I gotta be on time
I gotta go, go, go, go, go, go, go
I gotta go, go, go, go, go, go, go

Repeat from the beginning
Roll on down the line
