In honor of the Willys Jeep ad we posted as part of our Antique Auto Advertising series, here’s a Car Tunes bonus, the Grateful Dead performing Sugar Magnolia, unquestionably the only rock ‘n roll song that mentions Willys – though some Willys enthusiasts say that Bobby Weir mispronounces the word. There’s a dispute whether the correct pronunciation is “will-less”, or “will-lees” as the Dead sing it. Included is a video from 1987, an audio version from 1973 that some Deadheads consider to be a peak performance of that song, and a video from the closing of Bill Graham’s Winterland Ballroom on New Year’s Eve 1978. It’s not one of the song’s best performances, Jerry Garcia looks like he was celebrating a bit early, but the video captures a bit of the spirit of the times.
More songs after the jump.
