It’s obvious, of course, that each of the cars had decals touting the TDI fuel economy on the first day of media previews (yesterday) and appeared the second day (today) sans decals.  My suspicious mind immediately assumed that VW was getting a little nervous about boasting about gas mileage in light of the litigation going on against Honda over its claims.  A VW rep on the floor told me that this was not the case.  He said that one of the floor plan bosses thought that the cars looked cluttered with the decals and ordered them removed.

Funny, then, that at last year’s Detroit show I snagged this photo of a VW with the very same decals on it.

Now, I have no reason to doubt his explanation but still, I wonder.
