Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander had a very good year in 2011, winning both the Cy Young award as well as being named Most Valuable Player. Pitchers rarely win the MVP award but Verlander deserved it, going 24-5 and throwing 250 strikeouts, with an earned run average of 2.40. Justin seems like a fine young man with his head on his shoulders and not too big of an ego for someone with his talent and performance, but he still probably says to himself, “Yeah, I deserve it” when he gets behind the wheel of what is now a stable of exotic sports cars. When pitchers and catchers reported for spring training in Lakeland, Florida this week, Verlander showed up in a brand new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG gullwing. The SLS joins his Ferrari 458 Italia, Maserati Gran Turismo, and Aston Martin DBS. Some Detroiters have said he shouldn’t be driving foreign cars and playing for a Detroit team. Yes, that’s an SLS AMG roadster in the video (shot at the 2012 Chicago auto show), not the coupe with flip up doors, but the only photos we have of the coupe are of the make-your-eyes-bleed-Euclid-green e-Cell version that was shown at last year’s NAIAS and we don’t want to damage your vision.
I think those folks are silly. I live in the Detroit area, love the Motor City and if I made the coin that the Tigers ace banks, I’d know I’d own an Aston Martin, a Lotus and a few other nice cars made outside the US. On the other hand, I’d also have some kind of Cadillac CTS-V, probably the wagon. You gotta represent the D. I’m surprised that nobody at the RenCen has thought that getting the biggest star athlete in Detroit to drive a CTS-V might be good publicity for the brand and for Detroit. I’m sure Verlander would be impressed with any of the CTS-V variants from Cadillac and it’s not like GM is adverse to comping celebrities with free use of expensive cars. Wolfgang Puck gets a free Escalade and Cadillac just gave West Coast Customs a CTS-V Coupe to
deface customize for Justin Bieber. I have nothing against young Mr. Bieber. He’s got talent and a very cute girlfriend, and I know that Cadillac has wanted younger customers but age wise I’m pretty sure that Verlander and his fans, are closer to the CTS-V’s target demographic than Bieber and his fans.
