Those That Live by the Celebrity Sword, Die by it Too

Maybe hitching your wagon to some celebrity’s fame may not be the best way to market your wares. Last fall GM arranged for West Coast Customs to do their thing to a CTS-V coupe for Justin Bieber. That generosity was repaid by Bieber’s manager giving the teen heartthrob a “hard to get” Fisker Karma live on the Ellen Degeneres Show. Henrik Fisker can’t be all that happy. Though the Karma got exposure and some reflected light from Bieber’s stardom, the singer and his manager screwed up one of the Karma’s main selling points. The Karma is a serial hybrid. Like the Chevy Volt, it runs on batteries for the first 30 miles or so, and then a gasoline engine runs a generator to provide current for the car’s electric motor. Bieber, though he may like cars, must not be terribly well informed on the subject and he asked his manager, on-air, “Is it all-electric?” and his manager replied “It’s all.. it’s an electric car.”
